Story of a Photography Assistant

Photo by Nicole Connolly; Anabelle Harari during the staging process for an executive photo session.

One of the first things I realized when I started working with Nicole was how good she was at making people feel comfortable during photo shoots. As someone who is often behind the camera, instead of in front of it, I forgot how uncomfortable getting your picture taken could be. Trying your best to look confident after days of thinking about what outfit you’ll wear and how to style your hair can be agonizing!
But what Nicole does so well and what really makes her stand out from other photographers is her personality that shines, and lets others relax and have fun in her presence. I often see Nicole smiling ear to ear, chatting about local news or events, or just encouraging her clients with a strong and resounding “THAT’S GREAT!”
As an assistant to the photographer, I too try my best to make clients feel comfortable. I reassure them that they look great, jump in to fix any fly-aways and I’m quick with my lint roller. But at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter how nice the outfit is, or how perfect the hair, it won’t matter if you’re uncomfortable in front of the camera – it shows! The best advice I can give anyone looking to get his or her photo taken is to have as much fun with it as you can.
Once you let loose the magic really begins!
